In the end, Patrick (thankfully) did not win any judicial elections. However, there has been some changing for New York State's judicial law. Did Patrick's campaign cause this change? Probably not, but he'd like to think he did something of substance.
A new bill entered the State Senate this year that would affect the New York State law as it pertains to Town Justices.
Bill S139C was introduced by Senator Sean M. Ryan, and passed the state Senate to move to the State Assembly in May. It requires the 100 townships with the most caseflow to be run by justices with at least 5 years in the State Bar Association. Unfortunately, this is only 100 of the State's more than 800 towns. On top of this, as discussed in other pages on this site, the issue is also not entirely due to fact that judges are not required to be lawyers. This said, we at A New Age of Justice are fully in support of this bill, as we believe it represents a palpable move foreward on the issue of New York's unqualified, often problematic local judges. We would also like to remind people that there are many town justices who are qualified and have run their courtrooms with fairness and justice (hence their title). Patrick has had the privelage to know multiple of such judges who helped him on this campaign. This is an ongoing issue, but there is always hope of progress, so long as people like you keep working for it.
Thank you for taking the time to support Patrick in his campaign for the better, more just world we all deserve.
This bill is still active, and to find out more about this bill and/or reach out to your local Assembly member regarding Senate Bill S139C, follow the link below.
